Statue of Minamoto no Mitsunaka in front of JR Kawanishi Ikeda Station
Minamoto no Mitsunaka was the great-grandchild of the 56th Emperor Seiwa, and it is said that he left Kyoto which was then the capital to live in Tada in the central area of Kawanishi City. In 970 (Genroku 1) he established Tada-in (now Tada Shrine) and laid the cornerstone for Seiwa Genji.
Generals of future generations who spread their name across the nation such as Minamoto no Yoritomo who opened the Kamakura Shogunate and Ashikaga Takauji who opened the Muromachi Shogunate were all descendants of Mitsunaka, and Kawanishi City is known as the Origin of Seiwa Genji.
The Mitsunaka public statue that watches over the traffic of the townspeople at JR Nishikawa Station was built in 1989, and behind it there are weeping cherry trees planted to create a sublime image with a beautiful pink-colored background in spring, giving pleasure to the eyes of the people heading towards the station or waiting for the bus at the roundabout.
The statue has a height of around 6 meters, a width of around 3 meters and a depth of around 2 meters, while the base is carved with the words “Minamoto no Mitsunaka, Founder of Genji” and a signboard that introduces Minamoto no Mitsunaka stands next to it. Mitsunaka sits astride a horse and is armed with a short sword, bow and arrow while looking into the distance.
