/ Sanda City Former Kuki Family Residence Museum
Sanda City Former Kuki Family Residence Museum
Designated as a Hyogo Prefecture Important Tangible Cultural Property, this is one of the few examples of quasi-western architecture in the country from the early Meiji Period (around 1875) and was built by Kuki Ryuhan, who at the time was head of the Kuki Clan who had been the chief retainers of the Sanda domain for generations. Quasi-western architecture refers to architecture made by builders to imitate the genuine western buildings that followed the Meiji Restoration. A highlight of the Former Kuki Residence is the combination of the appearance of a traditional merchant’s house with western building techniques. At first glance it looks the same as the facades of other merchant houses remaining in Sanda, but the windows on the 2nd floor veranda on the left-hand side when facing towards it are made in a western style. In the interior as well, there is a western-style room in part of the 2nd floor within the traditional tatami floor construction where various account books, notes and pages of old Japanese books were used as lining, and then fusuma paper was used as wall paper to cover the walls entirely from the ceiling. Small objects such as Kuki Ryuhan’s handmade drawing instruments, rulers as well as paint and palettes for planning are exhibited inside the museum.
