- Facing the Mukogawa riverside and with views of the Rokko-san mountain range is this hot springs town nestled within the surrounding nature. Takarazuka Onsen's origins go far back; the spring's effects against illness were well-known since having been documented in poems written by Fujiwara no Mitsutsune in 1223 and in Muromachi-era legends such as the Shiobidera Kannon Engi and the Gokuusui no Yurai. The current Takarazuka Onsen began in 1884 when a man named Kosaji Toyozaburo had the idea to turn the water bubbling up at the right edge of the Mukogawa River, at Hatogaoka, into a spring; in 1887 a bath and ryokan were opened. The chloride spring water contains sodium, and boasts effects that sooth neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, cooling of the extremities, skin dryness, exhaustion, and many other ailments. Access to the springs is convenient and there are nearby attractions, such as the Takarazuka Revue, making this a beloved spot among those looking for a getaway with plenty to do. Locals and others can even take home the spring water from a supply point.
