Arioka Castle Ruins
In 1574, at the end of the Sengoku period of civil war, daimyo (feudal lord) Araki Murashige took command of Itami Castle from Lord Itami, completely remodeling it and giving it the name Arioka Castle. It was less a fortress, and rather a full castle town; its moat and earthen walls also encircled a samurai town and merchant townhouses, covering an area about 0.8 km (east-west) by 1.7 km (north-south). Murashige, however, disobeyed his lord Oda Nobunaga and surrendered the castle in 1579. Then, in 1580, Ikeda Tsuneoki's eldest son Yukisuke (Motosuke) entered thecastle and reinstated the name Itami Castle; the pair were relocated to Mino in Gifu Prefecture in 1583, and the castle was abandoned. It was designated a National Historical Site in 1979, and the ruins were turned into a park.
