: This ancient temple, said to have been built by Prince Shotoku, was burned down in a battle but reconstructed by order of Toyotomi Hideyori. It is the 24th of 33 stops in the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
A statue of the 11-Headed Kannon (also known as the Goddess of Mercy), carved from a Japanese torreya tree, is a nationally-designated Important Cultural Property and depicts the temple's main object of worship. It is famous as a deity of safe childbirth, rescuing women from hardship.
Every August 9th the temple holds the Hoshikudari ("starfall") Festival; visiting on this night is said to bring the same benefits as visiting the temple for 46,000 days.
