/ Matsuo Shrine

: With over 1,000 years of history, the shrine once known as Matsuomarusha, is believed to have been built by the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, to pay homage to the god of war. The main shrine, with its single-windowed nagare-zukuri roof, is a city-designated Cultural Property; the entire shrine grounds and its beech trees are designated an environmental protection zone. The shrine was also revered by generations of shogun families since the Kamakura period, and each new shogun presented a new bow as a type of protection charm. Also enshrined here is the deity Oyamakui-no-kami of Kyoto's Matsuo Taisha Shrine.
